chained_bear commented on the word akita inu
Dog breed "native to the island of Honshu in the region of Akita, Japan, where it has remained unchanged for centuries. (the dog, or the region?) For centuries the Akita was used as a fighting dog, and for this reason the breed became nearly extinct. However, the Japanese government, unwilling to lose this national treasure, prohibited its use in bloody spectacles. It was also used in big-game hunting, but today it is practically exclusively a companion dog with fans in the United States and Europe. (Are these electric or hand-held fans that need companions?)" (Simon & Schuster's Guide to Dogs, 1980)
Note: "inu" means "dog."
